FAQs & Recommendations:
*All handmade paper is made by me in Minnesota, USA (not mass-produced or sourced from another country and sold on Etsy).
• Materials: Cotton, abaca (Manila hemp), internal sizing, calcium carbonate, lightfast pigments, & inclusions (for the handmade paper that contains gold flecks, dried floral petals, or metallic luster pigments).
• Handmade paper is archival, acid-free, tree-free, and made with renewable resources.
• Method: Hollander beater and restraint dried
• GSM: Handmade Paper is approximately 200-250 gsm, medium-textured. They feel robust, rattle, and feel substantial when compared to commercial, pure cotton paper that is approximately 300 gsm. This paper is perfect for letterpress, hot foil press, commercial digital printing, embossing/debossing, hand-lettering, artists, and many other print methods.
• Production time: Depending on the quantity ordered, production time is approximately 1-3 weeks for standard sizes and colors. Please feel free to message me for a better sense of turnaround time.
• Handmade paper sizes are approximate. Due to the nature of handmade paper, variations in fibers, and shrinkage rates, expect variations in sizes, shape, texture, and colors. No two sheets are the same; each sheet of pulp is pulled by hand using traditional methods that produce natural deckled edges. The gorgeous deckle edges create irregular or uneven edges, the hallmark of their beauty, organic feel, and unique aesthetic. The labor-intensive and time-consuming process is what makes handmade paper so luxurious and highly valued.
• Many sizes and colors are available. Please contact me for in-stock sizes and custom orders if what you see in the listings is not available. Custom colors and sizes are available for a fee. I will color match as close as possible to Pantone or other color samples you send me.
• Rush orders are an additional 25% of the total from the order and does not include rush delivery fees.
• Shipping upgrades are available on all orders for an additional fee.
*Recommendations/Wedding industry tips:
• Order samples to test print, especially when using at-home printers, as printer settings and tolerances vary with deckle edge paper and thickness in paper.
• Handmade paper is made in small batches. I recommend ordering all that you need in one order, as this creates a cohesive suite and ensures you get the same paper from the same color batches.
• Order more than you think you’ll need. It's standard practice for printing companies or letterpress/foil press printers and wedding stationers to tell the bride to order 25% or more of handmade paper for each size. This is for several reasons: extra paper is needed to test print, register the printing machine, account for usual printing mishaps (printer feed jams), when multiple print methods are involved, and to provide extras for the flat-lay photographer, personal keepsakes, lost invites/mailing errors, and giving them to parents or loved ones.
• Mailing handmade paper: Wedding industry stationers and planners often recommend shipping handmade invitations using an additional outer envelope to protect the handmade paper/invitations from the sorting machines at the post office. Even hand-cancelling non-machinable mail eventually goes through multiple sorting machines in the postal system. An outer envelope could be either a commercial outer envelope, a cello bag used as an outer envelope (most cost-effective method, but be sure to place the mailing stamps on the outside directly on the cello bag), a box, or stiff/bubble mailers. These methods protect the invitation suite from scuff marks, tears, damage to the addresses or wax seals, and any other potential damage the sorting machines can have on precious invitations. With the USPS staffing shortages and budget cuts, it's also recommended that you mail your invites sooner than usual timelines and use tracking labels to ensure delivery.
• Dark envelopes, whether handmade or commercial stock, can transfer color onto the white or light-colored invitation cards through the fast and often hot postal sorting machines. To prevent this, wedding stationers place thin tissue paper inserts over the invitation and sometimes between each card of the ensemble. This tradition dates back hundreds of years to when invitations were written by hand. Now it's used to protect individual cards from modern print methods as well. Vellum wraps or vellum jackets also offer this protection from dark envelopes as well.
